4 november days in mexico city
we stopped over in mexico city for a few days after our wedding in sayulita, nayarit (mexico). i had only ever been to coastal cities in mexico so this was definitely a different experience. it’s a very metropolitan city but all the trees everywhere made it somehow feel peaceful too. a couple friends had just been there before coming to the wedding, and when asked what we should do, they responded “the frida museum and lucha libre.” truthfully, i remember little else other than those two things because they were so.damn.awesome. also we spent a lot of time lounging at the hotel because to be honest, having a wedding is exhausting and we didn’t feel like doing anything. makes the case for honeymoon’s on beaches with no plans.
eat & drink:
- merotoro: surf and turf style restaurant located on a quiet tree lined street. sit by the open patio on a warm day with some wine and delicious food and watch all the people/dogs walk by.
- brassi: european feeling brasserie. we got fries and wine while waiting for our quintonil table but the vibe was charming!
- quintonil: you can find this restaurant on the world’s 50 best restaurants list, and let me tell you, it’s worth it. we were pretty ambitious and showed up without a reservation but got lucky and they let us have a table at the later seating. we did the tasting menu with wine/beer pairings and it.was.so.good. bring your appetite, there are approximately 10,000 courses.
- jules basement: we’re suckers for speakeasy-type bars and this one involves walking through a restaurant’s meat locker (that might be an exaggeration) to get to this dark downstairs bar. go for the drinks, stay for the live jazz band and skull aesthetic.
do:
- museo frida kahlo: explore the home of frida kahlo and diego rivera and get the churros on your way out. buy your tickets online and skip to the front- they only let in so many people at a time and we were stuck waiting in line for quite a while (the pitfalls of never planning anything in advance).
- wander around colonia condesa neighborhood: we spent a whole afternoon just wandering the streets of this area of the city, wandering in and out of shops, watching the many dogs at the parque mexico. there were so many cute coffee shops/cafes/bars i wish we had stopped into.
- check out a lucha libre wrestling match: it sounds cheesy AF but this was hands down one of the best things we’ve ever done. 100%.
